Detailed Program

The first day of the meeting was divided into three dialogue sessions aimed at determining what future we want for our metropolitan areas and the mechanisms to support such a vision.

The second day was organized into sessions in which participants from local, metropolitan, and regional institutions, representatives of member states, and representatives from civil society discussed the Montréal Declaration. Following a first plenary session where the day’s schedule and the draft declaration was presented, participants were asked to move to the discussion session to which they were invited (Member States, Local Governments or Civil Society). Three concurrent sessions took placeso as to build consensus for the adoption of this strategic document. These sessions addressed the issue of the metropolitan challenges we face in this 21st-century wave of urbanization and the issue of metropolitan mechanisms and their implementation with a view to fostering metropolitan cooperation by multiple partners. Each session start with a conversation between representatives from member states, metropolitan institutions, regional authorities, municipalities, and civil society. In the afternoon, a plenary session allowed for closing statements and the adoption of the Montreal Declaration on Metropolitan Areas.
